Petition to City Council

A priority of this association at the moment is to work to find a solution to the problems of parking in the area around the Sunderland Royal Hospital site. Residents living the streets around the hospital will be only too aware of the problems caused by parking, mainly by staff and visitors to the hospital.

Many people living in the area represented by this association will have signed a petition calling for a full public consultation on the proposals that the City Council have put forward with respect to a parking management scheme. Although the council distributed the proposals to 2700 households and held a two day exhibition at St Gabriel's Church, we are aware that many people living in the affected roads did not receive this information. We will therefore present the petition to the Council on the residents behalf at the next council meeting on Wednesday 25th March at 6pm.

  1. I live in one of the streets opposite the hospital on the Chester Road side, i have lived here for 8 years and have seen a significant increase in parking from hospital staff who seem to have no thought or concern for the residents, i have on occasion had a car parked outside my door from 8am to 8pm. I cannot see how they plan to retify this problem, when they dont seem prepared to listen to any suggestions made by the residents or the newly established Residents Association. Unless the council are going to benefit in anyway, by means of taking money from the residents for parking permits, no resolution will ever be made, as suggested a multi-storey car-park would be the best solution, but as it will cost the council money to build this, it is something that they will not even consider, i feel no resolution to this will be made as the council are not prepared to listen and we are left to get even more frustrated with the parking situation.

  2. Hi, thanks for your comment.

We, as the residents association, are determined that we are not going to go away until the council do implement a residents parking scheme which works for the residents (and even then we will stick around to make sure it is working as it should)!

As a resident affected by the parking of hospital staff, I beleive that it is the hospitals responsibility to build the multi-storey and the bill shouldn't be footed by residents or the council and it's council tax payers. I think that the planning permission that the hospital have applied for should only be allowed IF the hospital amend their plans and include a multi-storey.

Don't forget that you can comment on the planning application (details are on this website).
